Welcome to UK spearfishing. We set up this web shop as a result of trying to find good quality spearfishing equipment with a good standard of service. We hope that you find on these pages what we were looking for! Spearfishing in the UK can be a rewarding experience as there is an abundance of fish from May to October in relatively shallow waters. It can, however, be cold, especially at the beginning of the season and so a special free diving/spearfishing wetsuit is needed of at least 5mm. The wetsuits have what is called 'open cell' on the inside and, for spearfishing at least, a tougher outer surface. Other special equipment includes masks, fins and, of course, the guns. For extreme depths spearfishermen prefer low volume masks as air in the masks causes a limitation in air available to the diver due to the need for mask equalisation. However, ultra low volume masks will steam up in the cold UK waters so a compromise must be reached.

Fins are generally of the full foot pocket variety and much longer than scuba fins, but beginners may want to start off with shorter fins to prevent embarrassment on the beach when trying to put them on! Beginners guns need to have lighter gauge power bands on them as loading the guns is an acquired art and fingers can easily become cut on the wishbone or wishbone mounting. Gloves are a very good idea as hands are repeatedly in contact with sharp objects such as spears, rocks and fish spines and can also get stung by jellyfish. A knife is essential for safety as there is a chance of getting caught in fishing lines etc and a chance of catching fish that need to be finished off! A buoy is another good safety item as it shows other water users that a diver is present, especially when actually during a dive. Diving to any depths under 20m will require weights on a quick release belt. Shallower water will require more weights and it is not unusual to have 5kg when wearing a 5mm wetsuit, which has a lot of it's own buoyancy. We hope this short explanation helps as we are NOT able to give general advice on spearfishing or free diving at this time, especially as to where the good spots are, so please do not ask! Any questions about the products that we sell are welcomed.

Opening hours are from 8.00am to 6.00pm, Monday to Saturday

Health and safety:

  • Never point a speargun at anybody or yourself, loaded or unloaded.
  • Never load a speargun or fire one out of the water.
  • Free diving is dangerous and there is a risk of shallow water blackout and getting trapped underwater. Always carry a knife.
  • Never dive unless in optimum health.
  • Never dive alone.
  • Be aware of local tides and currents. Freak waves may be caused in some locations when ferries arrive in harbour.
  • Watch the weather.
  • Dead fish in the water may attrack seals and sharks.
  • Never dive beyond your capabilities.
  • Use a surface marker buoy (SMB) and watch out for boat traffic.
